Interpreting equipment - Mundus Verborum

What is interpreting equipment?

Interpreting equipment is used at events to help interpreters convey the message to the audience more effectively.

In simple terms, the equipment allows interpreters to listen more easily to the speaker and focus on the message they need to put across. It blocks unnecessary noise and gives the voice output more clarity.

What types of interpreting equipment are available?

The two most common types are:

  • Booth

Normally used for large events, both in terms of audience and the number of languages involved, booths provide a professional and efficient experience, albeit at a cost. They can be visible to the audience or hidden away. Further equipment may be necessary (see below).

  • Tour guide system

This is a portable kit. It’s usually used at smaller events or when more flexibility is required, for instance when the interpreter needs to move around, or when the venue has no physical space for a booth.

Is any extra equipment required?

Depending on the venue layout and interpreting set-up, you may need further equipment such as monitors, audio feed cables, a PA (public audio) system, and push-to-talk microphones (for Q&A sessions).
