DipTrans (Diploma in Translation) - Mundus Verborum

What is the DipTrans?

The DipTrans (Diploma in Translation) is an exam provided by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) that aims to assess the quality of anyone who wishes to work as a translator.

Besides that, the Diploma in Translation is a good way that any translator can show to their clients, and most importantly to themselves, that they can produce work of high quality.

The DipTrans is equivalent to a postgraduate-level qualification, and it’s regulated by Ofqual and recognised worldwide.

The examination lasts seven hours and assesses the quality of work produced by the translator on a selection of topics divided into units as per below:

Unit 1

The candidates have to translate a general text. While the text is not of a specialised nature, it is demanding in terms of volume and the candidates have to translate into the target language to a professional standard of accuracy.

Unit 2

The candidates have to translate a semi-specialised text from the following topics:

  • Technology
  • Business
  • Literature

Unlike Unit 1, the text will be more demanding in terms of terminology. Similarly, the text must be produced to a professional standard of accuracy.

Unit 3

The candidates have to translate a semi-specialised text from the following topics:

  • Science
  • Social Science
  • Law

Unit 3 is similar to Unit 2 in format and duration.

Passing the exam

The candidates must pass all three units in order to be granted the Diploma in Translation. They may re-sit the exam, but they must pass all units within five years after the first attempt.
